For low-income households · Updated April 2026
Free or near-free tablets — what's still available for low-income households.
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended, taking most free-tablet programs with it. But low-income households still have options: a few Lifeline-participating providers still ship tablets with service, and nonprofits like PCs for People and Human-I-T distribute refurbished tablets for $0-50.

Nonprofit refurbishers — most likely source in 2026
PCs for People (pcsforpeople.org) distributes refurbished tablets to households under 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for $0-50 depending on device. Human-I-T (human-i-t.org) runs similar programs, often pairing a device with subsidized internet. EveryoneOn (everyoneon.org) maintains a nationwide directory of low-cost tablet and internet options searchable by ZIP code.
Lifeline providers that include tablets
A handful of Lifeline providers still ship basic tablets as part of their monthly Lifeline service. Cintex Wireless (T-Mobile network) has included a tablet with some plans in select states. Standup Wireless has done similarly. Availability changes frequently — ask the provider directly during signup whether a tablet is currently included in your state.
State and library programs
California, New York, and several other states offer tablet-lending through public library systems. Most libraries will issue a tablet with cellular data for 30-90 day loans to library-card holders. Ask your local library about "hotspot lending" or "tablet lending" — programs vary by county.
