Best free or low-cost tablet programs — 2026.
With ACP gone, the best sources of free or near-free tablets are nonprofits (PCs for People, Human-I-T), a few Lifeline-participating providers (Cintex Wireless, Standup Wireless), and public library lending programs. Here's how they compare.
Lifeline is free
You will never pay for the benefit itself. The government pays it directly to your chosen phone provider.

#1 — PCs for People (nonprofit, national)
National nonprofit refurbisher. Accepts households under 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines or SNAP / Medicaid / SSI recipients. Tablets typically $0-50, often with a subsidized internet hotspot add-on at $15/month. Best for: anyone who wants a working tablet fast without restrictive criteria. Apply at pcsforpeople.org.
#2 — Human-I-T (nonprofit, regional)
Similar to PCs for People. Strongest availability in California, Nevada, and Arizona, but ships nationally. Often bundles a tablet with a subsidized internet connection. Best for: West Coast applicants who want both device and internet in one application.
#3 — Cintex Wireless (Lifeline provider)
Lifeline-participating provider on T-Mobile's network. Includes basic Android tablets with some Lifeline plans in select states (availability shifts). Best for: SNAP / Medicaid / SSI recipients who want free monthly data on the tablet, not just a one-time device.
#4 — Public library lending programs
Most large library systems (NYC, LA, Chicago, SF, Seattle) lend tablets with cellular data for 30-90 day periods. Renewable. Free with a library card. Best for: short-term need, or evaluating whether a tablet works for your use case before committing.
