Independent guide — not the government, not a Lifeline provider

Last updated: April 2026

TruConnect Review (2026) — 5G Lifeline on T-Mobile, Honestly Assessed

TruConnect is one of the better picks for Lifeline customers who want 5G data and free international calling. Here's the complete breakdown — who it fits, who should pick a different provider, and how to apply.

TL;DR

Rating: 4.4/5. TruConnect is a T-Mobile-network Lifeline provider strongest for 5G-capable plans and international calling. Available in 40+ states. Free smartphone included, with full BYOD support.

Pick TruConnect if: you want 5G data and free international calling on a T-Mobile-based Lifeline plan. Skip it if: you live in a rural area with weak T-Mobile coverage (try SafeLink), or you want the absolute largest nationwide Lifeline provider (try Assurance).

  • Those who need the biggest data cap possible (try AirTalk Wireless)
  • People in states TruConnect doesn't serve (check your state page)

5G on a Lifeline plan — what to expect

TruConnect is one of the few Lifeline providers that markets 5G plans. Important caveats:

  • 5G requires a 5G-capable phone. The free phone TruConnect ships may or may not be 5G — ask during signup. If you BYOD, your phone needs 5G support too.
  • 5G availability matches T-Mobile's deployment. Most major metros have it. Mid-sized cities are uneven. Rural areas are mostly 4G LTE still.
  • Lifeline customers may be deprioritized during heavy network congestion. That's a T-Mobile policy, not TruConnect-specific. It means in very busy areas at peak times, your data may slow down.

Our honest take: 5G is nice to have but not the primary reason to pick TruConnect. Pick based on coverage in your area first, 5G second.

International calling — what actually works

TruConnect bundles free calling to select countries with most Lifeline plans. The included-countries list changes, but typically covers popular Lifeline-customer destinations like:

  • Mexico (landlines and mobiles)
  • India (landlines and some mobiles)
  • Philippines (landlines)
  • China (landlines and some mobiles)
  • Various Caribbean and Central American countries

Check TruConnect's current included-countries list during signup. If international calling matters to your household, this is one of TruConnect's biggest advantages over Assurance Wireless.
