Independent guide — not the government, not a Lifeline provider

Updated April 2026

How to switch Lifeline providers (and keep your number).

Takes about 20 minutes. No cost. Federal law guarantees you can move your Lifeline benefit — and your phone number — to any participating provider, any time.

The 5-step switch.

Don't cancel your current service until step 5 — if you do, you risk losing your phone number for good.

  1. Pick your new provider.

Compare coverage, data caps, and phone options. Our 2026 rankings are a good starting point — filter by your state to see which providers actually serve you well there.

  2. Gather your info.

You'll need: your current phone number, your current provider name, your current account number (on your bill or in the provider's app), and your account PIN (or last 4 digits of SSN if no PIN).

  3. Apply with the new provider.

Most applications take 5-10 minutes. You'll re-confirm your Lifeline eligibility (via the National Verifier — no document uploads in most states). Tell them you want to port your existing phone number.

  4. Wait for the SIM or phone to arrive.

Most Lifeline providers ship free in 2-5 business days. If you bring your own device (BYOD), they'll send a SIM only. Don't activate it yet.

  5. Activate — number transfers automatically.

When you activate the new SIM (follow the provider's instructions), number porting kicks off. Takes 24-72 hours to complete. Once you can call/text on the new SIM, your old service auto-cancels through the Lifeline transfer.

Mistakes to avoid.

  • Don't cancel your old service first. If you do, your phone number is released back to the carrier pool and can't be ported to the new provider.
  • Don't apply to multiple new providers. The National Verifier can only process one Lifeline transfer at a time. Multiple simultaneous applications delay everything.
  • Don't let paid add-ons keep billing. If you had extras on your old plan (international calling, extra data), call the old provider to confirm they stop billing after the transfer.
  • Don't miss your renewal window mid-switch. If your annual Lifeline recertification is within 30 days, finish recertification with the old provider first to avoid losing the benefit during the transfer.
