Independent guide — not the government, not a Lifeline provider
Find providers in your stateLast updated: April 2026
5G Lifeline depends on two things: a provider with 5G coverage at your address and a 5G-capable phone. Compare providers to verify network support, BYOD compatibility, current device terms, and plan details before you apply.
A provider can support 5G service without guaranteeing that every approved Lifeline customer receives a 5G-capable phone. You need both a 5G network at your address and a compatible phone model.

Two things: (1) the Lifeline provider you pick must offer 5G service at your address, and (2) the phone you use has to be 5G-capable. A provider may support 5G service while still shipping an entry-level 4G/LTE phone, or while requiring you to bring your own compatible 5G phone.
5G rolled out across the US over the past several years, but coverage still varies wildly by zip code. Urban areas mostly have strong 5G. Rural areas often have only 4G LTE. Before picking a 5G provider, check their coverage map for your specific address:
Honestly — probably not. 4G LTE is fast enough for almost everything people actually do on a phone: texting, calls, maps, email, social media, and even video streaming. 5G is noticeably faster if you do heavy downloads or live in a dense 5G coverage area, but it's not a must-have for most Lifeline users.
That said, 5G phones also work on 4G networks — so there's no downside to using a compatible 5G-capable device. If future-proofing matters to you, verify the exact device model, provider network, and ZIP-code coverage before you enroll or buy a BYOD phone.
